Saying “lower-end” is a bit of a misnomer. The Cartier Roadster still starts at $4,200, high roller figures to many. At the same time, a Cartier watch is worth saving up for compared to many other timepieces. Cartier makes a pretty polished watch. They have been doing so for a while, and mistakes they make in design are few and far between. Serious watch lovers are going to be most interested in pieces like their new Calibre collection that includes a brand new in-house made automatic movement, but replica Roadster fans will like this new watch. The replica Roadster S is certainly a Roadster, but a scaled down version. Further, people who find the original Roadster watch to be a bit strange in design will like the Roadster S. It retains the same shape, but with a different personality. Lots of AR coating and a perfectly even crystal thickness ensures a totally glare and distortion free look in most viewing angles. Other watch makers need to look to Cartier to model their crystals and AR coatings. You’d barely known anything was over the dial at times. Using a slightly more simple version of the Roadster dial style, the Roman numerals and inner hour marker ring make the watch enjoyable to read. After all, the dial on the replica Roadster is very similar to that on the Roadster. There is a new outline on the ring of where the bullet shaped magnifier lens used to be to retain that shape.

Inside the watch is Cartier’s automatic Calibre –  ETA 2892 based movement, which works fine, but isn’t anything fancy. It is a good movement to have in a sport watch given its relative level of durability. While this is no action-adventure watch, with its lighter weight, 100 meters of water resistance, and secure fit on the wrist, you could easily be “active” with the watch and not have it impede you too much. Though I tend to not recommend people do wild things in nice watches.

The term “mystery” as applied to the Cartier means that you can’t immediately see how the hands are attached.

Cartier was one of the most impressive brands to visit at 2013 SIHH.  Start at 100 years ago, they were making a range of beautiful mystery desk and mantle clocks. That heritage has now been miniaturized into a pair of high-end wrist watches in their upper-end collection. One is the Rotonde de Cartier Mystery watch and the other is the Rotonde de Cartier Double Tourbillon Mystery Watch. That latter piece will likely get a dedicated timepiece so stay tuned for more information on that.

Cartier’s Rotonde Mystery watch is rather lovely and comes in 18k white or rose gold. The Rotonde-style case in this instance is 42mm wide with a tone of distinct Cartier styling. You get that typical deeply cut and engraved dial with blackened sections and Roman numerals for much of the dial. Then there is the “hole” where you see the hands. Just in case you aren’t familiar with these systems, the movement moves two transparent sapphire crystals that have the hands mounted on them. It creates the illusion that the hands are floating in space. The effect is interesting, but as many people commented when I first put an image of this on Instagram and Facebook while at the show, it doesn’t super sexy to see your arm hair through the watch.

Inside replica Cartier Rotonde Mystery watch is an in-house made caliber 9981 MC manually wound movement, which is made up of 158 parts and operates at 21,800 bph. For each SIHH show, the most exciting thing for me is visiting Cartier and seeing their new limited edition art pieces that often revolve around animals.

Cartier has a dial with a crocodile carved in relief, which is made by natural stone agate. Agate is a common but beautiful stone that I believe is similar to amethyst. It is found primarily in volcanic rocks as I understand it. Agate is often blue and further tends to have various shades of blue that lighten toward the center. By selecting the right piece of an agate rock to carve, a skilled artist can make use of the gradient ramp to their advantage. Sure enough, in this replica Cartier watch you can see how a section of agate is used to highlight the crocodile head in a lighter shade of blue, but the lower sections are a darker blue. It makes for a beautiful effect.

Although agate rock may not be that uncommon, watches with hand-carved agate dials are. In 2010, Cartier released a brand new edition of men’s watches –  the Calibre. It was rather revolutionary for the brand for a couple of reasons, bringing Cartier’s men’s collection into the 21st Century. It was also a mass produced watch that contained an in-house made Cartier movement – something that previously only existed in their most high-end pieces( for the Calibre, I think the price is still expensive).

Calibre is handsome, the right size, and possess very much what a modern guy wanted in a replica Cartier. Sure models like the Santos and Roadster would always be popular, but I think Cartier needed something with a little sport in it as well as pizzazz. Since 2010 Cartier has trickled out variations on the original design by adding a bracelet option in 2011, and for 2012 there is a chronograph. It wasn’t difficult to predict that Cartier would make the Calibre as a new edition. In fact, the Calibre case is used in many of their much higher-end pieces as well. Though those models are distinct from the basic replica Calibre models because they target vastly different price demographics. This relica Cartier Calibre Chronograph is the second version of the “mainstream luxury” Calibre watch collection. The case design is unchanged from the original save for the addition of the chronograph pushers.
